Ronley Teper is one of Canada's most unique and interesting musicians. As a singer/songwriter, storyteller, music director, puppeteer, and even TEDx speaker, she’s had no shortage of artistic adventures. Watching her provocative performances (with the help of her indie improv orchestra, the Lipliners) it’s clear why fans can’t get enough of her shows and Toronto’s top musicians are literally lining up to play with her.
Teper’s lively Lipliners shows have garnered a cult-like following in Canada and beyond, and after countless requests from fans, she was inspired to make her fourth album a live one. aLIVE was recorded by Steve Major in front of a live audience over two nights at The Piston. Backed by her 13-piece band, she had just two rules: no rehearsals and no overdubbing later.
The result is her most enchanting recording to date, capturing the unforgettable spirit of her live performance and bringing her carefully crafted songs and stories to life through mixing and editing mastery. Though there were no rehearsals, Teper’s instinctive command for her band is remarkable.
“We’re a live band so this album was a long time coming,” Teper says. “The Lipliners hadn’t even heard some of these songs before but they’re pro-improvisers. There are no surprises between our show and the record. I wanted aLive to really feel like a live show – I feel like studio recordings are a separate art form.”
